Eymet
Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Eymet in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, is a well-preserved bastide town founded in 1270 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of King Louis IX.
Designed as a fortified settlement, its street layout follows a grid pattern centered around a large arcaded square, typical of medieval bastides. Its strategic location on the banks of the Dropt River made it important in the Hundred Years' War, changing hands multiple times between the English and French until the Battle of Castillon in 1453.
The original castle built in 1320 was destroyed in 1830, but the town still retains medieval architecture with half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. Eymet is known for its vibrant markets, riverside walks, and a loyal community of residents and expatriates attracted by its rich history and rural charm.
