Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure)
Gondar, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Fasil Ghebbi, also known as the Royal Enclosure, is a 17th‑century fortress‑complex in Gondar, in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, built by Emperor Fasilides when he turned Gondar into a permanent imperial capital around 1636. Situated within a roughly 70,000‑square‑meter compound encircled by a 900‑meter‑long stone wall, it contains castles, palaces, banqueting halls, stables, archives, churches, and royal buildings constructed by several Ethiopian emperors over the following centuries. The architecture mixes local Ethiopian styles with Nubian, Arab, and Portuguese‑influenced decorative elements, creating a unique highland palace‑city unlike anything else in the Horn of Africa. Fasil Ghebbi served as the heart of imperial power until the late 18th century and today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting Ethiopia’s royal history, craftsmanship, and religious traditions in its crumbling stone towers and quiet courtyards.
