Verified Fort Cornwallis

George Town, Penang, Malaysia

Fort Cornwallis is a historic star‑shaped bastion fort in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, built by the British East India Company in the late 18th century and completed in 1810 as the largest standing colonial fort in the country.

It sits on the northeastern edge of the city near the Esplanade and the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, on the spot where Captain Francis Light first landed to claim Penang Island for the British in 1786. Originally erected as a simple palm‑trunk stockade for protection against pirates and local threats, it was later reconstructed in stone and brick but never saw actual battle, serving more as an administrative and symbolic stronghold than a combat site.

Today the fort is a well‑preserved heritage landmark with old cannons, a gunpowder magazine, a small jail cell, the first Christian chapel in Penang, and the Seri Rambai, a large 17th‑century cannon with local fertility legends, and it functions as one of George Town’s main tourist attractions offering views of the sea and the city skyline.
