Sarawak Botanical gardens
Kuching, Malaysia, Malaysia
Sarawak Botanical Gardens (Taman Botani Sarawak) is a 206-acre botanical garden located in Petra Jaya, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, at Q104-4, Kampung Istana, 93050 Kuching, near Wisma Bapa Malaysia.
The garden was announced in 2016 by Sarawak's Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who envisioned it as a Kuching landmark, major tourist attraction, and "the pride of Sarawak," with the federal government allocating RM10 million for its development as part of Malaysia's Beautiful Garden Nation plan.
Created on land near Jalan Astana that was formerly a police training centre, the landscaped garden is designed for eco-tourists to see and study rare species of Sarawak's unique flora and fauna, making it one of several major initiatives supported by the federal Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry through its National Landscape Department.
The gardens are still in the process of being refurbished, with completed sections described as very nice, and the site serves as a good place for wildlife spotting, where visitors have seen collared kingfishers, monitor lizards, and small birds. The gardens are open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with visitors arriving by driving to Satok Bridge continuing to Wisma Bapak Malaysia or via Tun Salahuddin Bridge in Pending, though the location is considered somewhat not easily accessible without a convenient route via Darul Hana Bridge at Main Bazaar.
