Fort l'Écluse
Léaz, France, France
Fort l'Écluse is a historic fortress located in the commune of Léaz in the Ain department of eastern France, near the Swiss border.
Built in a narrow passage between the Rhône River and the Jura Mountains, it was designed to control one of the most important routes into France and has played a strategic military role for centuries. The site originated as a medieval stronghold and was expanded over time, including major fortification work under French rule.
After being damaged during conflicts in the early 19th century, it was rebuilt and strengthened, resulting in the impressive structure visible today. Today, Fort l'Écluse is a popular tourist attraction known for its dramatic setting above the Rhône Valley, its underground stairway of more than 800 steps, historical exhibitions, cultural events, and scenic hiking opportunities.
