Fort Montague
Eastern Nassau, Bahamas
Fort Montague, located in eastern Nassau on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, is the oldest surviving fort in the city, constructed from local limestone between 1741 and 1742 under military engineer Peter Henry Bruce to defend the eastern harbor entrance against Spanish invaders.
Originally armed with 23 cannons and stocked with gunpowder, it played a key role in the 1776 Battle of Nassau during the American Revolutionary War, where U.S. forces briefly captured it with minimal resistance as defenders retreated to Fort Nassau.
Today, this compact, square-shaped historic site offers guided tours, panoramic views of Nassau Harbour and Paradise Island, and a glimpse into colonial defenses, attracting visitors for its preserved walls, cannons, and proximity to Montagu Beach in a quiet, less-crowded area.
