Fort Srebrna Góra
Srebrna Góra, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, Poland
Fort Srebrna Góra, located in Srebrna Góra village in Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, is a vast 18th-century Prussian mountain fortress complex built from 1765 to 1777 by order of King Frederick the Great to defend the Silver Pass against Austrian threats.
Comprising 12 detached forts including the central multi-level Donżon Fort with 151 casemates, nine wells, and self-sufficient facilities for 3,756 soldiers, it famously withstood a Napoleonic siege in 1807 led by Jérôme Bonaparte without surrender.
Decommissioned in 1867 after serving as a training ground, it functioned as a WWII POW camp for Polish officers before becoming a national historic monument, museum, and top tourist site with preserved bastions, tunnels, and artillery exhibits.
