Fortress of Ghat
Ghat, Fezzan, Libya
The Fortress of Ghat is an old Ottoman‑built fort perched on the hill of Koukemen above the desert oasis town of Ghat in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya, close to the Algerian border.
It was originally erected in the 17th century to control a key Saharan caravan route and later partly destroyed when Italian forces occupied the area in 1913, then rebuilt in the 1930s with elements of Ottoman, Italian, and possibly French military architecture mixed with local Tuareg building traditions.
The fortress crowns the hilltop with stone walls, defensive positions, and observation points, while an underground tunnel beneath its western wall is believed to have served as an emergency escape route during sieges.
Today the rebuilt fortress is open to visitors and offers sweeping views over the compact, walled old town, surrounding palm plantations, the nearby Acacus Mountains, and the golden dunes of the Sahara, making it one of Ghat’s most distinctive historical and tourist landmarks.
