Tobruk
Libya, Libya
Tobruk is a port city on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Libya, about 120 kilometers west of the border with Egypt, situated on the Gulf of Bomba.
It is one of the country’s main deep‑water harbors and has long served as a strategic military and trade hub, dating back to the ancient Greek colony of Antipyrgos and later becoming a Roman and Byzantine frontier fortress. The city is best known for its heavy fighting in World War II, when it changed hands several times between Allied and Axis forces and was the site of a prolonged siege involving British, Australian, and German troops.
In modern times Tobruk has refineries and multiple ports, including the Marsa el‑Hariga oil terminal, and it has also served as a political and administrative center, briefly hosting an internationally recognized Libyan government during the country’s recent divisions.
