Gamleborg
Aakirkeby, Denmark, Denmark
Gamleborg, near Aakirkeby on Denmark's Bornholm island, is the island's oldest Viking fortress, built around 750 AD on a steep cliff at the edge of Ekkodalen (Echo Valley) in Almindingen forest.
It served as the seat of Bornholm's kings through the Viking Age until about 1150, when occupants relocated 700 meters northwest to Lilleborg, leaving behind massive earth ramparts and granite walls reconstructed around 1100 AD.
Today, the accessible ruins amid dense woods draw hikers for their historical significance and dramatic setting, reachable via trails from Ekkodalshuset parking.
