Gatas
Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico
Gatas, more commonly known as Isla de Gatas, is a small island located in barrio Playa within the municipality of Ponce in southern Puerto Rico.
Originally a one-acre island, it became a tied island in the 1950s when a dike was constructed connecting it to the Puerto Rico mainland via a tombolo, effectively turning it into a cape rather than a true island and expanding it to 13 acres (5.261 hectares). The island is fully developed and home to Club Náutico de Ponce, a private sports complex with a marina, and it features a beach on its western side.
Located just 0.12 miles (0.2 km) south of the mainland shore across from Punta Peñoncillo and south of La Guancha and the Port of Ponce, Isla de Gatas is one of seven islands in the municipality of Ponce, alongside Caja de Muertos, Morrillito, Ratones, Cardona, Isla del Frío, and Isla de Jueyes. The island sits at an elevation of 10 feet and extends 0.31 miles (0.5 km) from Punta Caranero to the east.
