Gombe Stream National Park
Kigoma Region (Western Tanzania), Tanzania
Gombe Stream National Park, located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the Kigoma Region of western Tanzania, is a small but world-famous national park best known for its wild chimpanzees.
It gained international recognition when Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research there in 1960, leading to discoveries that transformed our understanding of animal behavior and human evolution. The park’s steep forested hills, valleys, and lakeshore habitats are home to chimpanzees as well as baboons, red colobus monkeys, and many bird species.
Accessible mainly by boat, Gombe offers visitors a unique opportunity to trek through the forest and observe some of Africa’s most studied and closely monitored chimpanzee communities in their natural environment.
