Guédelon, located near Treigny-Perreuse-Sainte-Colombe in Burgundy, is one of France’s most unusual and fascinating historical attractions.

Rather than being an ancient castle, it is a modern project that began in 1997 to build a complete 13th-century medieval castle using only the tools, materials, and construction techniques that would have been available during the Middle Ages. Set in a former quarry surrounded by forest, the site serves as a large-scale experiment in archaeology and craftsmanship.

Stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, tile makers, and other artisans work in traditional ways, allowing visitors to see how medieval builders created castles centuries ago. The project is designed as a typical fortified castle from the reign of Philip II of France and has become an internationally recognized example of experimental archaeology.

Every stage of construction helps researchers and visitors better understand medieval engineering, materials, and daily life.
