The Gyeongju Historic Areas in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, preserve the cultural and historical legacy of the ancient Silla Kingdom, which ruled much of the Korean Peninsula for nearly a thousand years. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the area contains an exceptional collection of royal tombs, palace ruins, temples, pagodas, Buddhist sculptures, and archaeological remains dating mainly from the 7th to 10th centuries. Often called “the museum without walls,” Gyeongju offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore landmarks such as Cheomseongdae Observatory, Wolseong Palace, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, and the royal burial mounds scattered throughout the city. Together, these historic sites showcase the artistic, religious, scientific, and architectural achievements of one of Korea’s greatest ancient civilizations.
