Hatirjheel

Dhaka, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh

---

Hatirjheel, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a large lakefront urban development and recreational area that has become one of the city’s most popular landmarks.

Historically a wetland and natural drainage basin, the area was transformed through a major redevelopment project completed in 2013 to improve traffic flow, restore water bodies, and create attractive public spaces. Covering more than 300 acres, Hatirjheel features scenic lakes, bridges, walkways, cycling paths, gardens, and waterfront roads that connect different parts of Dhaka.

The project also serves as an important water retention area, helping with stormwater management and reducing flooding in surrounding neighborhoods. Today, Hatirjheel is a favorite destination for sightseeing, evening strolls, boating, and enjoying views of the city skyline. Its combination of modern infrastructure, open spaces, and lakeside scenery has made it one of the most recognizable and valued public spaces in the capital.
