Hatley Castle in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, was completed in 1909 as the grand retirement home of James Dunsmuir, a wealthy coal baron and former premier of British Columbia.

Designed by architect Samuel Maclure in the Scottish Baronial style, the 40-room mansion features a Norman tower, extensive oak and rosewood interiors, and finely crafted details with local stone. The castle sits on a large estate with beautifully landscaped gardens planned by Boston landscape artists. The Dunsmuir family lived there until the late 1930s, after which the Canadian government purchased the property in 1940.

It became a naval training college during World War II and later evolved into Royal Roads Military College until 1995, when it was repurposed as the administrative center for Royal Roads University. Today, Hatley Castle remains a popular historical site, celebrated for its architecture, gardens, and role in Canadian history, with parts of the grounds open to the public.​
