Verified House of Wonders

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The House of Wonders, or Beit el Ajaib, is a historic palace in Stone Town, Zanzibar built in 1883 by Sultan Barghash bin Said as a symbol of modernity and power. It was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and an elevator, making it the tallest and most impressive structure in the city.

The palace features architectural elements combining Omani and British influences, with wide verandas supported by cast-iron columns and ornate carved doors with Quranic inscriptions. It originally served as a ceremonial palace and official reception hall, connected by covered walkways to neighboring palaces.

Over time, it was used as government offices and later converted into a museum showcasing Swahili and Zanzibari history and culture, including traditional boats, royal furniture, and portraits of historic figures. Though a balcony partially collapsed in 2012 and the building is currently closed for repairs, it remains a prominent cultural landmark and symbol of Zanzibar’s rich heritage.
