Verified Iaal Fortress

Lebanon, Lebanon

Iaal Fortress (Arabic: Qalʿa ʾIʿāl), also called Mustafa Barbar Agha Fortress or Barbar Fortress, is a 19th-century Ottoman defensive castle in the village of Iaal in the Zgharta District of northern Lebanon’s North Governorate, built in 1816 by Mustafa Agha Barbar, who had been appointed Ottoman governor of Tripoli in 1798 and chose the site for its strategic hilltop position overlooking the surrounding valleys.

The fortress covers about 5,000 square meters and is entered through a metal-studded wooden door leading into a courtyard with a central stone basin called birket as-sbaa (“basin of the lions”) decorated with carved lions, surrounded by small rooms that once served as bathrooms and bedrooms, while the interior also contains stables, wells, sleeping quarters, reservoirs, a mosque, old barracks, a small graveyard with the tombs of Barbar and his family, and a stone staircase leading to a upper level where Barbar had his office and adjacent women’s rooms.

Although most of the castle’s roof has collapsed over time, a small section is still used by some of Barbar’s modern descendants, and the site functions today as a local historical landmark that can be reached by driving from Zgharta toward Khaldieh and then to Iaal, a village of roughly 1,000 people situated about 6 kilometers from Zgharta.
