Verified Saint Louis Castle

Sidon, Lebanon, Lebanon

Saint Louis Castle (Arabic: Qalʿat al‑Muʿizz, also called the Land Castle or Qalaat al‑Muizz) is a ruined medieval fortress in Sidon (Saida) on Lebanon’s southern coast, originally built in 1254 by French crusaders on the site of an earlier Fatimid fortress that had been constructed in the 10th century on the town’s ancient acropolis hill.

The castle was named after King Louis IX of France (Saint Louis), who appears to have spent considerable time there during the Frankish occupation of Sidon, and over the centuries it was restored after the Arab reconquest, damaged by the Mamluks, then extensively rebuilt and adapted in the 17th century by Emir Fakhr al‑Din II, before suffering further damage from looting, Ottoman decay, and later modern conflicts including Israeli shelling in recent decades.

Today the castle stands as a dramatic ruin of stone walls, towers, and courtyards on a hill overlooking the old city and the Mediterranean, preserving remains of the ancient acropolis and a theater, and it has served variously as a shelter for Palestinian refugees in 1948 and as a historical landmark that is now under study with plans for restoration, while its position and layered history make it a key example of how Crusader, Fatimid, and Ottoman military architecture have been combined in one site.
