Verified Jardin botanique de Montréal

Montreal, Canada, Canada

Montréal's Jardin botanique de Montréal is the third-largest botanical garden in the world after London's Kew Gardens and Berlin's Botanischer Garten, spanning 75 hectares in eastern Montreal just minutes from downtown near the Biodôme and Olympic Park.

Founded in 1931 by renowned botanist Brother Marie-Victorin and designed by landscape architect Henry Teuscher, it opened to the public in 1936 and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2008 for its beauty, diversity, and world-class collections that reflect the founders' vision of an "ideal botanical garden" with aesthetic, scientific, educational, and social functions.

The garden houses approximately 22,000 plant species and cultivars across 10 exhibition greenhouses, 30 thematic gardens, a vast arboretum, and the Frédéric-Back Tree Pavilion, including climate-controlled greenhouses featuring cacti, banana trees, and 1,500 orchid species, plus stunning rose beds that bloom in summer.

It serves as a living museum with plants from around the globe, protects nearly 800 species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and offers year-round events, exhibitions, and activities while functioning as a calm, spacious oasis for families to reconnect with nature. The garden is part of Espace pour la vie, Canada's largest natural sciences museum complex, and fulfills its core missions of conservation, research, and education since its founding.
