Jawor Castle
Jawor, Poland, Poland
Jawor Castle in Jawor, southwestern Poland, originated as a 13th-century wooden stronghold on a cliff above the Nysa Szalona River, evolving into a stone fortress under Duke Bolko I the Raw around 1278-1287 as the seat of the Duchy of Jawor-Świdnica.
Featuring an irregular triangular plan with thick 2.2-meter stone walls integrated into the town defenses, a central rectangular tower (6.3 x 7.6 meters), a larger northwestern stone tower (10 x 11 meters), and residential wings including a 9x29-meter main house with vaulted basement and arrowslits, it hosted key Piast parliaments amid repeated rebuilds after fires, wars, and sieges like the 1648 Imperial assault.
Modernized in 1510-1538 with an artillery bastion and Renaissance residence form by Otto von Nostitz post-Thirty Years' War, the preserved complex now reflects Gothic origins blended with later Baroque elements, serving as a museum overlooking the historic town famed for its UNESCO-listed Peace Church.
