Jericoacoara, affectionately known as “Jeri,” is a remote beach paradise tucked behind towering sand dunes on the west coast of Ceará, Brazil. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has transformed into one of the country’s most coveted travel destinations while preserving its rustic charm and natural beauty.

The village is part of the Jericoacoara National Park, a protected area established to safeguard its unique ecosystems of white-sand dunes, freshwater lagoons, and mangrove forests. The streets remain unpaved and lit only by moonlight, preserving the celestial spectacle of the night sky and reinforcing the town’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

Jeri’s beaches are legendary, with highlights like Praia Principal, where windsurfers and kitesurfers harness the constant trade winds, and Praia da Pedra Furada, home to a naturally sculpted rock arch that frames the setting sun during certain times of the year. The Duna do Pôr do Sol, or Sunset Dune, is a daily gathering spot where visitors climb to watch the sun dip into the Atlantic, often to the rhythm of capoeira circles and live music.

Inland, Lagoa do Paraíso and Lagoa Azul offer crystalline waters and hammocks suspended over the shallows, inviting hours of blissful relaxation. Despite its growing popularity, Jericoacoara remains refreshingly off-grid. Access requires a journey over sand tracks from the nearest town, Jijoca de Jericoacoara, adding to its sense of seclusion.
