Verified Jurów

Poland, Poland

Jurów is a small village in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship within Tatra County, part of the historic Spiš region near the Slovak border and Białka River, close to Bukowina Tatrzańska.

Founded in 1546 under Wallachian law by legendary highlander robber Jurko—first sołtys with his 12-man band—in the Niedzica Castle estate owned by Polish magnate Olbracht Łaski, it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918, then Poland (1920-1939, 1945-present) with Slovak occupation during World War II.

Primarily a pastoral community relying on sheep and cattle breeding with alpine traditions, villagers grazed in Tatra valleys like Biała Woda and Jaworowa from 1590 until 19th-century losses to Hungarian estates and Prussian Prince Christian Hohenlohe in 1879, relocating shepherd huts to the Podokólne clearing for seasonal use amid forests and mountains.
