Kandahar is a major city in the south of Afghanistan and serves as the capital of Kandahar Province. It is the second largest city in Afghanistan, after Kabul, with a population that has grown to more than 600,000 people in recent years. The city is located on the Arghandab River and sits at an elevation of around 1,010 meters above sea level.

Kandahar has a long and rich history. It is one of the oldest settled areas in the region, with origins going back thousands of years. The city was a major site during the Achaemenid Empire and later became one of the cities founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. Over the centuries, it was ruled by many different empires, including the Mauryas, the Greco-Bactrians, the Mughals, the Safavids, and others. Kandahar is often described as the spiritual center of Afghanistan because it is where several important Afghan leaders originated. The city also holds some of Afghanistan’s most religiously significant sites, such as the Shrine of the Cloak, which is believed to house a cloak worn by the Prophet Muhammad. Today, Kandahar is an important economic, political, and cultural hub for southern Afghanistan.
