Klooga
Estonia, Estonia
Klooga is a small borough in Lääne-Harju Parish, Harju County, northern Estonia, known for its somber history as the site of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.
Established in September 1943 as a subcamp of the Vaivara network, the Klooga forced labor camp held up to 2,500 prisoners, mostly Jews from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, who toiled in timber and concrete production for German forces.
On September 19, 1944, as the Red Army advanced, SS units executed nearly 2,000 inmates in a forest nearby, stacking and burning bodies on pyres; the site now features a Holocaust memorial with mass graves and a monument for reflection.
