Konary Castle
Poland, Poland
Konary Castle refers to the ruins of a medieval knightly fortress in the village of Konary, located in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship near Strzelin County, perched on a hill above the Koprzywianka river valley for natural defense.
First documented in 1355 as a stronghold of the Słupecki noble family of the Rawa coat of arms, it featured a rectangular residential building on a rocky spur, surrounded by earthen ramparts, a deep transverse moat, and constructed from local stone and early brick ("palcówka").
The site endured as a family seat through the late Middle Ages but fell into ruin over centuries, with surviving remnants like a vaulted cellar nearly obliterated by Russian artillery during the 1915 Battle of Konary in World War I, involving Polish Legionnaires under Józef Piłsudski.
