Korsør Fæstning
Korsør, Denmark, Denmark
Korsør Fæstning, also known as Korsør Castle, is a historic fortress located in the coastal town of Korsør on western Zealand, Denmark.
Built in the 14th century during the reign of Valdemar Atterdag, it was strategically positioned to control traffic through the Great Belt, one of Denmark’s most important waterways. The fortress was strengthened over the centuries, including the addition of cannon bastions during the Swedish occupation in the 1650s.
Although most of the castle buildings were later demolished, significant remains survive, including earth ramparts, bastions, a large medieval tower, and a storehouse built under Christian IV. Today, Korsør Fæstning is a well-preserved historical site that houses the Korsør Town and Strait Crossing Museum. It offers visitors a glimpse into Denmark’s military and maritime history and is notable for having one of the few surviving medieval fortress towers in the country.
