Krasnystaw is a historic town in eastern Poland's Lublin Voivodeship along the Wieprz River, first documented in 1376 and granted city rights in 1420 under the bishops of Chełm, who built a 14th-century castle later destroyed by Tatar raids in 1490 and 1499.

It served as the capital of the Chełm Diocese from 1490 to 1805, thriving as a trade hub on east-west routes amid invasions by Tatars, Swedes, and Cossacks, with fortifications including double rings of earthworks and moats added after rebuilds under kings like Aleksander Jagiellończyk.

Key landmarks include the Baroque Jesuit complex with St. Francis Xavier Church (early 18th century) and adjacent college now housing the Regional Museum, the 15th-century Church of the Holy Trinity rebuilt after Tatar destruction, a post-Augustinian monastery, preserved 18th-19th century market square facades, underground loess cellars, a 1920s town hall, remnants of the castle site, and a historic synagogue with Jewish cemetery.
