La Guancha
Ponce, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico
La Guancha (Paseo Tablado La Guancha) is a popular boardwalk and recreational complex located in the Playa barrio of Ponce, Puerto Rico, facing the Caribbean Sea at the city's marina.
Built in the 1990s at a cost of $2.6 million and inaugurated on June 23, 1998, it receives over 750,000 visitors annually and has become one of Ponce's hottest hangout spots where locals and visitors mingle. The main attraction is its diverse array of food kiosks turned restaurants serving local Puerto Rican fare and drinks, including affordable mojitos for around $5, along with bars and live salsa music that make weekends especially lively with large crowds and dancing.
Originally featuring a wooden waterfront boardwalk with an observation tower (where you can see the Cardona Island Lighthouse), a marina for renting pedal boats and kayaks, a beach, a children's playground, an open-space stage, and opportunities to feed tarpon and pelicans, the original boardwalk was damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and severely damaged again by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake in January 2020, remaining closed since then with the waterfront area fenced off.
Currently, La Guancha operates from a temporary location in the parking lot as Puerto Rico's largest food truck park, with food trucks and stores set up near the children's playground area, while reconstruction of the waterfront is planned but will take time. It's a family-friendly destination where people of all ages come to enjoy local food, music, warm sea breezes, sunsets, beach access, and a cultural experience, best visited Thursday through Sunday nights when it's most vibrant, and it offers free parking with easy access via Route 52 exit 104A and Route 12 south.
