Verified Labuan Botanical Garden

Malaysia, Malaysia

Labuan Botanical Garden (Taman Botani Labuan) is a scenic recreational park and botanical garden located in Labuan Federal Territory, Malaysia, covering 32.5 acres and situated along Jalan OKK Abdullah between the Labuan War Cemetery and Gurdwara Sahib Temple, about 2 kilometers east of the town center and behind the old airport.

Created on the grounds of the former Government House (locally known as "Bumbung 12" or "twelve roofs"), which was built in 1852 as the official residence for Labuan's first governor Sir James Brooke and later served as the residence for succeeding Residents, the gardens were established by Sir Hugh Low, the former Colonial Secretary of Labuan who made the first documented ascent of Mount Kinabalu.

The historic mansion served as a guesthouse for many dignitaries, including the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) who stayed there in 1922, but was completely destroyed on June 10, 1945, during heavy artillery bombardment by Allied forces to liberate Labuan from Japanese occupation, leaving only a water storage tank.
