Lake Tana
Lake Tana, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Lake Tana, in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, is the country’s largest lake and sits high on the northwestern plateau at around 1,800 meters above sea level. It covers roughly 3,000–3,700 square kilometers and is relatively shallow, with an average depth of about 8 meters and a maximum of roughly 14 meters. The lake is most famous as the main source of the Blue Nile (Abbay), which drains from its southern edge near the city of Bahir Dar and flows north toward Sudan and Egypt. Surrounded by fertile farmland and volcanic highlands, Lake Tana supports fishing, agriculture, and hydropower, and its waters and surrounding wetlands form a UNESCO‑recognized biosphere reserve rich in birdlife and endemic fish. Within the lake are numerous islands, many of which hold ancient Coptic monasteries and churches, adding a strong spiritual and cultural dimension to this scenic lake basin.
