Larnach Castle
Dunedin, New Zealand, New Zealand
Larnach Castle, located on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, New Zealand, is the country’s only castle, built between 1871 and 1887 by William Larnach, a wealthy merchant, banker, and politician.
Designed by architect R.A. Lawson in the Gothic Revival style, the castle features 43 rooms adorned with intricate stonework, woodcarvings, and plaster ceilings crafted by master European artisans.
The construction involved around 200 laborers for the main structure and took over three years, while the detailed interior work took another twelve. The estate included extensive grounds with a ballroom added in 1887 as a gift for Larnach’s eldest daughter’s 21st birthday. Larnach's life was marked by both success and tragedy, culminating in his suicide in 1898 after financial and personal difficulties.
The castle remained in various hands and uses over the years until it was purchased and restored by the Barker family in 1967, who opened it as a popular heritage and tourist attraction known for its rich history, haunting stories, stunning views, and internationally recognized gardens.
