Wellington Botanic Garden

Wellington, New Zealand, New Zealand

Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā is New Zealand's oldest botanic garden, located at 101 Glenmore Street in Kelburn, just minutes from Wellington's central business district at the top of the Wellington Cable Car, encompassing 25 hectares (64 acres) of specialized plant collections, colourful botanical displays, unique landscapes, protected native forest, and stunning views over Wellington city and the harbour. Established in 1844 when the New Zealand Company set aside a 5-hectare strip of land and officially established as the Wellington Botanic Garden by the 1869 Botanic Garden Act, the garden has offered relaxation, playtime, shade, and education about flora and fauna for more than 150 years, with original conifers, oaks, and redwoods planted in 1868 that still remain today alongside some of New Zealand's oldest surviving Pinus radiata trees. The garden is recognized as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and designated as an important Heritage Area by the Historic Places Trust, containing curated collections and seasonal displays including the award-winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden with 110 beds featuring over 3,000 different roses in more than 100 formal beds (flowering season November to April), the spectacular Spring display with 30,000 tulips and rich colours of rhododendrons, the large Begonia House displaying lush tropical and temperate plants including blooming tuberous begonias, orchids, hippeastrum, lotus, and giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, plus succulent and cacti gardens, a huge fern collection, rock garden, Camellia Walk, herb garden, and Australian garden.
