Lijiang Old Town, also known as Dayan Ancient Town, is a mesmerizing tapestry of history, culture, and mountain charm nestled in the northwest of Yunnan Province, China. With a history stretching back over 800 years, it was once a vital stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road, where caravans traded tea, salt, and horses between China and Tibet.

Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its harmonious blend of Han, Bai, and Naxi architectural styles, its intricate canal system, and its vibrant Naxi culture. The town is a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, arched stone bridges, and timber-framed houses adorned with carved windows and flower-filled courtyards.

Water from the nearby Jade Dragon Snow Mountain flows through a network of canals, giving the town its nickname “Venice of the East.” At its heart lies Sifang Street, a lively square where locals and visitors gather, and where traditional music, dance, and crafts bring the town’s spirit to life. Lijiang’s soul is deeply tied to the Naxi people, whose Dongba script—one of the world’s last surviving pictographic writing systems—still adorns signs and scrolls.
