Lubartów
Poland, Poland
Lubartów is a town in eastern Poland's Lublin Voivodeship, located about 26 km north of Lublin on the Wieprz River at the border of Lublin Upland and South Podlasie Lowland, with around 22,000 residents.
Founded on May 29, 1543, as Lewartów by nobleman Piotr Firlej—named after his Lewart coat of arms—under privilege from King Sigismund the Old on lands of villages Łucka and Szczekarków, it became a private noble town and important Calvinist center before devastation in the Swedish Deluge.
Revitalized in the 18th century by Paweł Karol Sanguszko—who renamed it Lubartów in 1744 after Lithuanian prince Liubartas, built Baroque churches and tenement houses, and expanded the mid-16th-century fortified residence into Sanguszko Palace—it endured Austrian partition in 1795, Russian Congress Poland fires, uprisings, a WWII Jewish ghetto liquidation, and now thrives with its palace as county offices, St. Anne Basilica, Capuchin monastery, and local museum.
