Lubsko
Poland, Poland
Lubsko is a small town in western Poland's Lubusz Voivodeship, within Żary County and near the German border on the Lubsza River, serving as the seat of Gmina Lubsko with around 14,000 residents.
First mentioned in 1258 as Sommerfeld amid Lusatian culture settlements and a Slavic stronghold, it received town rights around 1283 from Henryk Pobożny of Miśnia during Ostsiedlung colonization, thriving on trade routes from Żary to Gubin with medieval fortifications including the preserved Żarska Gate Tower.
Shifting through Polish Piast dukes like Bolko Świdnicki (1364-1368), Bohemian Crown, and Brandenburg rule with privileges for Frankfurt trade, it endured Hussite invasions, epidemics, fires, Napoleonic occupation by Polish uhlans, Prussian incorporation from 1816, and WWII labor camps before Polish reclamation in 1945, retaining its Gothic church, Renaissance town hall, and Secessionist architecture.
