Medieval Town of Toruń
Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Poland
The Medieval Town of Toruń in northern Poland is a remarkably well-preserved example of a medieval European trading and administrative center, situated on the Vistula River. Founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, it quickly became an important member of the Hanseatic League, with numerous impressive Gothic public and private buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries, including the house of Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born there.
The town consists of the Old Town, New Town, and the ruins of a Teutonic castle, all surrounded by medieval defensive walls. Its original street pattern and architectural heritage remain largely intact, making it a valuable source for studying medieval urban development.
The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its exceptional authenticity and completeness, showcasing medieval urban planning and brick-built architecture.
