The Memorial and Museum Auschwitz‑Birkenau in Oświęcim, Poland, is the preserved site of the former Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II‑Birkenau German Nazi concentration and extermination camps, now a museum and a place of remembrance dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust.

The camps, established in occupied Poland starting in 1940, became the largest complex of their kind, where at least 1.1 million people were killed, most of them Jews from across Europe, along with Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and others.

The Memorial and Museum, founded in 1947, covers about 200 acres with more than 150 preserved buildings and hundreds of ruins, including the remains of gas chambers, crematoria, barracks, and prisoner‑belonging exhibitions, using those physical remains and artifacts for education and research.
