Międzyrzecz Castle
Poland, Poland
Międzyrzecz Castle is a Gothic ruin in western Poland's Lubusz Voivodeship, built around 1350 by King Casimir the Great on a hillfort site from the 9th century Piast gord between the Obra and Paklica rivers, featuring irregular horseshoe-shaped brick walls up to 145 meters long, 2.5 meters thick, a cylindrical tower, and gate.
Destroyed by Teutonic Knights in 1520, it was swiftly rebuilt in Renaissance style under Sigismund the Old with artillery bastions, defensive galleries, a new residential wing, and thickened walls adapted for firearms by the Ostroróg family.
Further modified through the 16th century, it declined after partitions and wars, now preserving perimeter walls, bastion remnants, and a museum amid scenic parklands.
