Verified Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States

The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, commonly known as The Domes, is a Milwaukee landmark consisting of three connected glass conoidal domes built between 1959 and 1967. These domes showcase different climates: a Desert Dome with arid plants, a Tropical Dome housing nearly 1,000 plant species and birds, and a Floral Show Dome featuring seasonal floral displays and exhibitions.

The conservatory replaced an earlier glass conservatory built in 1898, designed to evoke London's Crystal Palace. Located within Mitchell Park, which was established in the 1890s on land donated by the Mitchell family, the Domes have become a cultural and botanical icon for Milwaukee, attracting over 200,000 visitors annually. The site includes greenhouses, walking paths, and gardens outside the domes.

The conservatory has undergone renovations over the years to replace glass panels, update lighting, and improve visitor facilities while preserving its mid-century modern architectural significance.
