Modlin Fortress
Poland, Poland
Modlin Fortress, located near Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in Poland at the confluence of the Vistula and Narew rivers, is one of Europe's largest and best-preserved 19th-century fortifications, originally initiated by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 as a bastion citadel during the Napoleonic Wars.
Expanded extensively by the Russians after 1815, it features a massive polygonal design with thick earthworks, brick barracks stretching over 2 km to house up to 30,000 troops, ravelins, gates like the Northern and Poniatowski, a granary, water tower, and two outer rings of 19 forts by World War I, making it a key defensive hub that withstood sieges in 1831 and 1915.
Today, the site serves as a cultural park with museums, underground tours, scenic viewpoints from the Tatar Tower, and events, symbolizing Poland's military history from Polish partisans to interwar garrisons.
