Morgan Arboretum
Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada, Canada
The Morgan Arboretum is a 245-hectare (610-acre) forested reserve located on McGill University’s Macdonald Campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, near the western tip of Montreal Island in Quebec, Canada.
This mixed-use woodland combines conservation, academic study, recreation, and forestry management, featuring a mosaic of remnant natural forest ecosystems, plantations, agricultural land, and 18 tree and shrub collections spanning 14 botanical families with nearly 330 horticultural species including fir, oak, birch, maple, spruce, and flowering trees.
The arboretum boasts an extensive 25-kilometer network of trails for year-round outdoor activities, including walking paths, two cross-country ski trails, and designated snowshoeing routes that traverse diverse landscapes from mature forests to natural ecosystem remnants. It serves as a rich habitat hosting 30 species of mammals, 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 170 species of migratory and overwintering birds, with 40 native Quebec tree species including American beech, sugar maple, butternut, and black cherry.
McGill University acquired the property in 1945 under the leadership of Dr. W. H. Brittain, Dean of Agriculture, and the arboretum has maintained its mandate to conserve the ecological forest resource while serving as a teaching and research site; the public contributes to its maintenance through the non-profit Morgan Arboretum Association, and the forest is open daily from 9 am for visitors to enjoy outdoor recreation, photography, and bird watching.
