The Muchinga Mountains in Muchinga Province, Zambia, form a significant escarpment that runs southwest to northeast, serving as a natural divide between the drainage basins of the Zambezi River flowing to the Indian Ocean and the Congo River flowing to the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range includes peaks such as Mumpu, the highest point in Zambia outside the eastern border zone, rising to about 1,892 meters.

The region is characterized by a mix of mountainous terrain, valleys, and seasonal streams, with habitats comprising woodlands, grasslands, and montane forests.
