Murol Castle (Château de Murol) is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in the village of Murol in France’s Auvergne region.

Built on a volcanic basalt outcrop, it was originally constructed in the 12th century to oversee important regional routes and was expanded over the following centuries with stronger defenses, towers, chapels, and residential buildings. The castle later belonged to the influential d’Estaing family and evolved from a military stronghold into a more comfortable noble residence.

Although it fell into decline after being abandoned, it was protected as a historic monument in 1889 and restored for future generations. Today, Murol Castle is one of the region’s most popular heritage attractions. Visitors can explore its ramparts and historic rooms while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Lake Chambon, and the Auvergne countryside.
