Mutomo Reptile Park
Mutomo, Kenya, Kenya
Mutomo Reptile Park is a newly established wildlife conservation and tourism facility located in Mutomo, within Kitui County in southeastern Kenya's semi-arid region, inaugurated on March 22, 2024 by Kitui Deputy Governor HE Wambua Kanani and Minister for Tourism Dr. Alfred Mutua as a groundbreaking initiative to promote environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation, particularly of snake species.
The park is situated within the Mutomo Hill Plant Sanctuary, adjacent to Mutomo Sub-County headquarters, and covers approximately 20 acres designed to create naturalistic habitats for snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and other reptiles, featuring both local and exotic species in various enclosures that allow close-up views.
It serves a dual purpose as both a captivating tourist attraction and a pivotal center for snake venom extraction and research, supporting medical research and anti-venom production while educating visitors about the fascinating yet dangerous world of reptiles. The facility showcases Kitui County's renowned venomous snakes including puff adders, black-necked cobras, and black mambas, which are frequently implicated in snake bites in the region, and offers guided tours where knowledgeable staff share facts about reptile habitats, behaviors, and conservation efforts suitable for both adults and children.
