The National Museum of Slavery in Luanda, Angola's capital within Luanda Province, opened in 1977 on Morro da Cruz overlooking the Atlantic, housed in the 17th-century estate of notorious slave trader Álvaro de Carvalho Matoso adjacent to the Capela da Casa Grande chapel where enslaved Africans were forcibly baptized before transatlantic shipment.

This poignant institution chronicles Angola's central role in the brutal trade that exported millions primarily to Brazil and the Americas, displaying chains, shackles, whips, iron collars, branding irons, and cauldrons used in rituals, alongside exhibits on pre-colonial African slavery, resistance weapons like poisoned arrows, and the social scars persisting post-independence in 1975. 

Amid ocean views symbolizing forced departures, it educates on human resilience through artifacts, photos, and archives aiding diaspora genealogy research, drawing visitors to confront this dark legacy in a modest yet powerful space.
