Niemcza
Poland, Poland
Niemcza is one of Poland's oldest towns in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, strategically located near the Ślęza River and Ślęża Mountain, serving as the seat of Gmina Niemcza with around 5,000 residents.
Evidence of early Lusatian culture settlements dates back millennia, followed by Germanic Silingi in the 4th century and Slavic Ślężanie after the 6th century, evolving into a key fortified center called Nemci or Nimptsch.
Conquered by Poland under Mieszko I around 990 after Bohemian control, it withstood Emperor Henry II's 1017 siege and hosted the 1137 Peace of Glatz between Polish and Czech rulers, later gaining town rights by 1282, new fortifications in 1295, and shifting under Czech suzerainty amid Hussite occupations and Piast rule.
