Nowy Korczyn
Poland, Poland
Nowy Korczyn is a historic town in southeastern Poland's Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, located on the Nida River bend as the seat of Gmina Nowy Korczyn with around 850 residents.
Founded in 1258 by Prince Bolesław V the Chaste as a "New Town" trading hub on the Kraków-Kyiv route, it featured a wooden castle burned by Rus forces in 1300, replaced in the 1350s by King Casimir the Great with a stone royal residence, defensive walls, and an artificial lake called Czartoria, making it a key political center for Jagiellonian kings and szlachta gatherings.
Thriving in the 16th century with granaries, markets, waterworks, and arms production, it suffered devastation during the Swedish Deluge in 1657 and Great Northern War in 1702, leading to decline, though remnants of the castle ruins and a classical synagogue persist amid its Jewish heritage.
