Nowy Sącz
Poland, Poland
Nowy Sącz is a historic city in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship at the confluence of the Dunajec and Kamienica rivers, serving as the capital of Nowy Sącz County with around 80,000 residents.
Founded on November 8, 1292, by Bohemian King Wenceslaus II on the site of the village Kamienica through the efforts of Kraków Bishop Paweł of Przemanków, it received Magdeburg rights as the only Polish town established by a Bohemian ruler, named after nearby Stary Sącz.
In the mid-14th century, King Casimir the Great erected a royal castle and defensive walls, elevating it as a key southern border stronghold, castellany seat, and trade hub that endured floods, fires, and wars while fostering German, Armenian, Jewish, and Polish communities.
