Nowy Wiśnicz is a charming town in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship, near Bochnia and Kraków, known for its well-preserved Renaissance castle and rich magnate heritage.
Its origins trace to a 14th-century defensive castle built by the Kmita family, later acquired by Sebastian Lubomirski in the late 16th century, with his son Stanisław founding the town proper at the castle's base.
Granted Magdeburg rights on June 8, 1616, by King Sigismund III Vasa—named "New" to distinguish it from older Stary Wiśnicz—Lubomirski funded key landmarks like the early Baroque parish church (1616-1621), town hall, and Discalced Carmelites monastery after the 1621 Battle of Chocim, while welcoming Jewish settlers expelled from Bochnia to build their own suburb with synagogue.
